Meditations: In Black & White II
Northville, Michigan – Sherrus Gallery of Fine Art is pleased to showcase a new collection of works in black and white by popular Michigan photographer, Jeff Milton, in the gallery's May exhibit, entitled, “MEDITATIONS IN BLACK & WHITE II.” Guests will have an opportunity to meet with Milton at the First Friday free wine and cheese public Opening Reception/Exhibit Sale on Friday May 2 from 6 to 9 p.m. Milton’s collection of new works will be on display through May 31, with select pieces remaining in the gallery’s continuing exhibit.
“Jeff’s first show in the spring of 2007 was an outstanding success,” said Sherrus Gallery owner, Sherri Mewha. “It was our first black & white photography exhibit and Jeff’s first solo exhibit – we were excited about the show but unsure of the reaction it would receive. The response was amazing from both private and corporate collectors.”
It’s understandable how Milton’s tranquil landscapes and calm sense of presence in his urban historical and architectural pieces are easily appreciated by many; first for his Michigan subject matter, which ranges from a night-lit American Coney Island on Michigan Avenue, to the roots of a gently fallen tree nestled amid the ferns in Horseshoe Falls of the Upper Peninsula. And second, for the brilliant tonal range, lighting and composition of his pieces -- a reflection of his overwhelming appreciation for the natural beauty of Michigan.
Although he was born in New Jersey and lived in both Illinois and Wisconsin, Milton has lived in Michigan since 1985. During that time he developed a great appreciation for the natural beauty of the state and region. After graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering and business, Milton worked in the information technology industry for over 20 years. In 2001, he started photographing seriously, studying with famed Michigan native photographer Monte Nagler, an apprentice of Ansel Adams.
“The purpose of my photography is to provide a glimpse, however brief, into the images of the world as I see it.” Milton said. “One of the joys of being a photographer is the discovery of new meaning in the familiar. In the past, I enjoyed runs through the woods. Now I travel the same trails with a camera and capture the movement of the water and trees as well as study the shadows and reflection.”
